From Their Farm to Your Fork

There’s even more to be found at a farm stand than the bountiful harvest displayed for sale, whether it’s a single operator roadside, a retail operation at the farm itself, or a teeming market of farmers and food purveyors. Each table of goods delivers a history lesson, provides insight into a community, and opens windows to the future.  It also offers an opportunity to connect with the people who are instrumental in getting the items to the table in front of you—those who, like you and I, are interested in purchasing.

That’s a rather long-winded way to say: A farm stand is a great place to learn new things and meet new people!

Here are a few questions you can ask to help fully connect you to your purchase:

  • Where, how, and when was this grown / caught / raised / produced?

  • How should this be stored (and for how long)?

  • What is your favorite way to prepare this?

  • How long will this be in season?

  • What will be harvested next? When will it be at the stand?

  • What’s the history behind this product? Is it a family recipe?

The time that you choose to visit a farmer's’ market can also have an impact on your experience. For me, an early arrival provides the perfect opportunity to engage with others before the crowds come. Some prefer to arrive just before closing, when prices are generally slashed to sell whatever is left.  However, even at its busiest, those working the stand will take the time to answer a question or two, and usually appreciate the opportunity to share what they know. These opportunities to connect are invaluable, especially considering who your purchase will be feeding!
